(Reuters) – Jannik Sinner cruised past Tomas Machac with a 6-4, 6-2 victory to secure a spot in the semi-finals of the Miami Open on Wednesday. The second seed will now wait to face either defending champion Daniil Medvedev or Nicolas Jarry in the next round.
The momentum of the first set of the match, which was played in humid conditions, shifted during a critical moment in Machac’s service game at 3-3. A missed forehand on break point allowed Sinner to take a 4-3 lead. Sinner then wrapped up the set with ease, holding serve to go ahead.
In the second set, another error from Machac’s forehand handed Sinner the break and a 2-1 lead. Sinner continued to dominate, breaking once more with a backhand winner to go up 4-1. He sealed the victory with a strong serve that Machac could not return.
Sinner, a two-time finalist at the Miami Open, showcased his skill with 16 winners and only four unforced errors in a commanding performance. This win marks his 20th victory of the year and sets the stage for a potential rematch with Medvedev in the semi-finals, following their previous encounters in last year’s Miami Open final and January’s Melbourne Park final.
Having only suffered one defeat this year, in the semi-finals of Indian Wells against eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner is in top form heading into the latter stages of the Miami Open.
