SIBU: Defending champions Terengganu confirmed their spot in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) men’s football quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over Sabah in their final Group B match at the Zaidi Adruce Stadium yesterday.

Terengganu’s victory was sealed by second-half goals from Mohd Iman Zaidi and Syafiq Aiman in the 70th and 78th minutes, securing top spot in the group and a place in the knockout stage, despite an earlier setback in their opening match on Monday.

They had lost 0-1 to Johor in an earlier Group B match.

With only the top two teams from each group advancing to the quarter-finals, Johor joined Terengganu as the Group B runners-up.

Meanwhile, the Federal Territories (FT) joined Perak in advancing from Group D after a 0-0 stalemate at the Mukah Stadium.

In Group A, Kelantan booked their quarter-final berth with a 2-0 win over Selangor at the Azman Hashim Stadium here.

Despite the defeat, Selangor also progressed as the group’s runners-up.

In Group C, Penang edged Kedah 1-0 to secure top spot with Melaka advancing as the runners-up.

The battle for the football gold, often considered the ultimate prize of the games, will continue with the last eight ties scheduled for Monday. — Bernama
