PARIS: The French government announced on March 11 that it had been the target of cyberattacks of an unprecedented level of intensity. A special crisis centre was activated to address the situation and restore online services that had been affected. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal’s office issued a statement indicating that the attacks began on Sunday night and impacted various government ministries, although specific details were not provided. By Monday afternoon, the statement noted that most services had recovered from the impact of the attacks and government websites were accessible once again.

A group of hackers known as Anonymous Sudan, which cybersecurity experts believe to be pro-Russia, claimed responsibility for the cyberattacks through online posts. However, neither the French prime minister’s office nor the digital safety agency commented on this claim or disclosed what specific targets were affected or the extent of the damage caused by the attacks. An official from France described the attacks as denial-of-service attacks, a common type of cyberattack involving overwhelming a site with data to disrupt its normal functioning and take it offline.

In preparation for the upcoming Paris Olympics and in response to previous ransomware attacks, including those on hospitals in 2021, the French government has been actively working to enhance its cyber defences. Additionally, France has accused Russia of conducting a prolonged online manipulation campaign against Ukraine’s Western supporters, which reportedly included duplicating the French Foreign Ministry website among other tactics. President Emmanuel Macron has adopted a firm stance against Moscow and the war initiated by Russian President Vladimir Putin in Ukraine.

Efforts are ongoing to strengthen cybersecurity measures and protect government services from future cyber threats. The French government’s response to the recent cyberattacks underscores the importance of safeguarding critical infrastructure and ensuring the security of online platforms. As countries increasingly face cybersecurity challenges, collaboration and vigilance are essential to mitigating the risks posed by malicious actors in the digital realm.
