A large number of dead fish have reportedly been discovered washed ashore in Teluk Bahang, causing concern among beach goers and fishermen.
An elderly homestay operator, known as Atan, aged 65, revealed that approximately 20kg of dead fish were found in his pond on Saturday (Aug 26). Shortly afterwards, he learned that numerous dead fish were also found along the coastline.
“Initially, I suspected that the water in my pond was contaminated, but a fisherman informed me that thousands of dead fish were seen floating near the sea,” Atan explained.
He further mentioned that such an incident is occurring for the first time in the 20-year history of his business in the area.
The recent proliferation of pink algae is believed to be the cause of the fish deaths, extending from Teluk Bahang to Teluk Kampi.
Last Sunday (Aug 27), Dr Annette Jaya Ram, the deputy director of the Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (Cemacs), discovered the presence of the pink tide in Teluk Bahang while walking in the National Park.
Dr Annette Jaya Ram noticed the algae from where she stood on the beach.
“During rainfall, nutrients enter the sea, and the algae or plankton thrive on these nutrients, resulting in such visible blooms,” Dr Annette Jaya Ram explained.
