(Reuters) – According to Mongolia’s emergency officials, a tragic incident occurred in the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar on Tuesday when a truck carrying 60 tons of liquefied natural gas exploded, resulting in the deaths of at least six people, including three firefighters. The Mongolia Emergency Management Office reported that at least 11 people were injured in the fire near the Dunjingarav market, and it took over 600 firefighters and 100 vehicles to extinguish the fire.

The Emergency Management Office posted on Facebook, stating that “Unfortunately, as a result of the accident, three officers of the 63rd Fire Fighting and Rescue Unit of the National Fire Service were killed while performing their duty.”

Local news outlets reported that the fire quickly spread to several nearby buildings, causing extensive damage to a residential building and burning scores of cars. The extent of the damage and the number of people affected is still being assessed.

Fiona Blyth, Britain’s ambassador to Mongolia, expressed her condolences on behalf of the British embassy, saying “Our thoughts are with the families of all those affected and we wish a fast recovery to those injured in this tragic event.”

The incident in Ulaanbaatar has shocked the community and prompted an outpouring of support and condolences for the families of the victims. It serves as a reminder of the dangers that emergency responders face in the line of duty.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion and the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. The Mongolian government and emergency services are working to provide support to the families of the victims and those affected by the explosion.
