    Three men arrested for alleged cable theft

    GEORGE TOWN : Three men has been arrested by police last Sunday (August 4) for allegedly stealing cables.

    State police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the trio were detained at Jalan Bukit Panchor at Nibong Tebal at about 4.25am after a police team from Nibong Tebal police station encountered a suspicious-looking vehicle nearby.

    “The police officers then instructed the vehicle to stop, and further inspections found various tools believed to be used for stealing cables,” said Comm Hamzah in a statement on Monday (August 5).

    Comm Hamzah said the suspects have been active in stealing cables in northern and southern Seberang Perai.

    He said the suspects aged between 31 to 33 have been remanded for two days starting August 6 to assist investigations.

    He added that with the arrest of the three suspects, police believe they had managed to solve cable theft cases in both districts.

    “The arrest has resolved 10 cable theft cases in the northern Seberang Perai district and three cases in the southern Seberang Perai district,” he said

    Checks found that all the suspects had criminal records related to drugs and crime.

    The case is being investigated under Section 29 (1) of the Minor Offenses Act 1955 for failing to provide an explanation for items in their possession.

    Meanwhile, in separate case, police has detained seven foreign nationals and a local after they were involved in a fight where a foreign men was stabbed at a restaurant on Bukit Genting Balik Pulau.

    Comm Hamzah said the suspects were arrested during an operation dubbed Ops Kejam Genting on August 5.

    “Initial investigations found that the fight was caused by discontent among themselves,” he said.

    He said the suspects aged between 20 to 35 has been remanded until August 11 for the case that is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
