In Sengerema, a district in the Mwanza region of northern Tanzania, three people have lost their lives due to hyena attacks between January 1 and February 24, according to an official on Sunday.
The first victim, a 16-year-old boy, was fatally attacked by hyenas on January 15 while he was out collecting firewood, revealed Sengerema district wildlife officer Paul Ponsian.
The other two victims were a 70-year-old farmer who was attacked on January 29 while on his way to his farm, and a 16-year-old girl who was attacked and killed by hyenas on February 16 while on her way to fetch water for her grandmother, Ponsian disclosed.
Ponsian emphasized the importance of residents in the Sengerema district remaining alert and cautious against potential hyena attacks, as the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA) has commenced efforts to track down the animals.
TAWA game rangers have already taken down five hyenas in an attempt to prevent further incidents, Ponsian reported.
