A consortium consisting of three universities has been tasked with conducting a situational analysis of the child-friendly city concept implemented by six local authorities in Sarawak. The universities involved in this endeavor are the University of Technology Sarawak, Swinburne University, and University of Malaysia Sarawak.
Signed in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), the local authorities of Kuching North, Kuching South, Padawan, Sibu, Miri, and Bintulu have committed to establishing the child-friendly city initiative. However, the next step is to assess the level of child-friendliness within these cities and devise strategies for potential improvements.
In a press conference held on Monday (Oct 16), Datuk Sri Fatimah Abdullah, the Minister of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, explained that the three universities will subsequently develop a proposal intended for the local authorities to follow in order to fulfill the initiative’s goals. Fatimah Abdullah added that Unicef will oversee the implementation of these measures for a period of three years, with the aim of recognizing these cities as officially child-friendly.
