ABUJA (Reuters) – Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has submitted 19 additional names to the Senate for approval as cabinet ministers, following the recent submission of 28 names. The Senate President read out a letter confirming the latest nominations.

Tinubu is facing significant pressure to revive Nigeria’s struggling economy, which is burdened by high debt, double-digit inflation, and widespread insecurity. The President’s cabinet choices come two months after his inauguration. Tinubu and his ministers face the challenging task of addressing the aftermath of the abolition of a popular fuel subsidy that cost the government $10 billion last year, benefiting the wealthy at the expense of public funds.

Among the new nominees are two former governors, political associates, and technocrats.

Protests erupted in major Nigerian cities on Wednesday as hundreds took to the streets to condemn the removal of the subsidy and demand a new minimum wage. Tinubu’s bold reforms aim to stimulate the economy, which has experienced sluggish growth for decades.

Tinubu has now submitted a total of 47 names to the Senate for approval. According to the constitution, the President must include a representative from each of the country’s 36 states in his cabinet, including ministers, ministers of state (junior ministers), and ministers in the presidency.
