A train collision in West Java province of Indonesia resulted in the death of four people and injuries to 42 others, according to local police. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation. Video footage from MetroTV and Kompas TV showed passengers being assisted out of train carriages, some of which had derailed completely.
The fatalities were all crew members, as confirmed by Ibrahim Tompo, a spokesperson for West Java province police. There were a total of 478 passengers on board the trains involved in the collision. Two crew members died from being caught between carriages. One body is still trapped under the debris from the wreckage, making it difficult to retrieve.
Following the collision, ambulances were mobilized to transport the injured to nearby hospitals. The crash occurred at 6:03 a.m. (1103 GMT) near the provincial capital of Bandung. The cause of the crash is not immediately clear, and both train operator PT KAI and the provincial government have committed to conducting a thorough investigation along with transport safety officials.
Land transportation accidents are unfortunately common in Indonesia. In 2010, a train crash claimed the lives of 36 people, marking it as the deadliest in recent years. In December of last year, a commuter line collided with a car near Bandung, resulting in five fatalities. Additionally, in November, 11 people lost their lives in a collision between a train and a minibus in East Java province.
