MOGADISHU, July 9 (Xinhua) — In a highly successful operation, the Somali National Army’s elite forces, Danab, in collaboration with regional and international forces, have eliminated forty al-Shabab militants in the lower Juba region of southern Somalia, according to officials.
Somalia’s Defense Minister, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, praised the joint forces for their latest offensive, which effectively neutralized the militants who were preparing for an attack on vulnerable targets.
While there is no official confirmation on casualties suffered by the army, it is acknowledged that the airstrikes and ground operations against al-Shabab have been intensified in recent times in central and southern Somalia, where the militants have established a stronghold.
This recent military operation against al-Shabab comes just one day after Defense Minister Nur bid farewell to thousands of troops, who have completed their training and are now ready to join the fight against armed groups.
