Former U.S. President Donald Trump has pleaded not guilty to new charges relating to his handling of classified documents after he left the White House, according to a court filing. The plea was entered on Friday, and Trump has also waived his right to be present in court for his arraignment on August 10.
Last week, federal prosecutors filed the new charges against Trump and two of his employees in a criminal case concerning the retention of sensitive government records at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. These charges are in addition to the 37 counts Trump was originally indicted on last month, bringing the total number of charges in the case to 40.
In the new charges, Trump and his valet, Walt Nauta, are accused of attempting to delete security footage that was being sought by a grand jury subpoena. Additionally, they are charged with making false statements to the FBI and unlawfully retaining an additional document containing national defense information.
Prosecutors have also added a third defendant, Carlos De Oliveira, who is an employee of Trump’s, to the criminal case. The investigation into the handling of classified documents after Trump left office continues to unfold.
The former president’s legal team, led by Katharine Jackson and Doina Chiacu, will be preparing his defense. The next court date is set for August 10.
