WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Former U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his disappointment after his arraignment on charges of attempting to overturn the 2020 election, describing it as a “very sad day for America.”
“This is a case of targeting a political opponent. Such events were never meant to occur in America,” Trump commented as he prepared to board his plane back to New Jersey following the court hearing.
Trump himself has faced allegations of misusing governmental power for personal political advantages. During his presidency, Trump underwent two impeachment trials, with the first occurring in 2019 due to allegations of pressuring Ukraine to investigate his Democratic rival, Joe Biden. Ultimately, Senate Republicans acquitted him of these charges.
