Former President Donald Trump announced on social media that he intends to turn himself in and be processed in Atlanta on Thursday following his indictment in Georgia. Trump stated on his Truth Social platform, “I’ll be going to Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday to be ARRESTED.” He believes the charges brought against him are politically motivated, aimed at derailing his reelection campaign.
A report from CNN revealed that Trump plans to surrender at the Fulton County jail, and the date was determined through negotiations between his lawyers and the Fulton County district attorney’s office regarding his consent bond and release conditions.
The Georgia indictment, consisting of 41 criminal counts, was unveiled last week, charging Trump and 18 other defendants with attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in the state. Upon Trump’s surrender, there will be a “hard lockdown” around the Rice Street Jail, as announced by the local sheriff’s office earlier on Monday.
As part of the bond agreement signed by Trump’s attorneys and Fulton Country District Attorney Fani Willis, he will face a $200,000 bond and will be prohibited from sending threatening messages on social media while awaiting trial in Georgia for his alleged actions in attempting to overturn the 2020 election.
While being the leading contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, Trump and his co-defendants were indicted on August 14. Willis granted them until Friday at noon ET to either surrender or face arrest.
The trial start date has been proposed by the prosecutors for March 4, while Trump’s legal team has requested a trial in 2026.
Trump’s decision to surrender on Thursday coincides with the Republican primary presidential debate, which he has chosen not to attend.
