PETALING JAYA: According to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Kelantan has the potential to attract foreign direct investments if it has the necessary infrastructure and facilities. The former prime minister commended the people of Kelantan for their business skills and efficiency, emphasizing that the state is known for trading and small industries. He noted that apart from the ROHM-Wako Electronics factory from Japan, there are not many foreign factories in Kelantan. However, many locals have migrated to the Klang Valley in search of career opportunities.
Dr Mahathir, who is now an advisor for the newly-formed State Government 4 (SG4), visited Kelantan to meet with Mentri Besar Datuk Mohd Nasuruddin Daud and state leaders. The discussion focused on Kelantan’s development and strategies to attract investment, such as utilizing land as capital and addressing clean water supply issues. Dr Mahathir believes that better facilities like good roads, power supply, and water access will enhance Kelantan’s appeal to investors.
During his visit, Dr Mahathir also visited a famous eatery in Kelantan that specializes in nasi berlauk, a mixed-rice dish. He highlighted that the eatery supplies the delicacy not only to locals but also to customers in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. The cooks shared that they start preparing 10,000 sets of meals at 3am, some of which are sold at their shop and others are transported to the Klang Valley via air or land.
The SG4 is an official grouping of four Perikatan Nasional-ruled states, namely Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, and Perlis, aimed at their development.
