TUNIS, July 24 (Xinhua) — The Tunisian government has established a crisis unit on Monday to manage and control the wildfires that have devastated the northwestern province of Jendouba.
In a statement, the government announced that Prime Minister Najla Bouden Romdhane formed the crisis unit under the guidance of President Kais Saied.
“The objective of the crisis unit is to coordinate the efforts of all involved parties in order to gain control over the fires and safeguard the citizens and their belongings,” the statement explained.
Following the outbreak of a wildfire in the forests, Tunisian authorities evacuated residents from the Melloula village in the province on Monday morning.
In the past four days, massive wildfires have wreaked havoc on approximately 470 hectares of forests in the village, which is situated in the coastal city of Tabarka.
According to the National Institute of Meteorology, Tunisia has been experiencing scorching heatwaves, with temperatures reaching almost 50 degrees Celsius in several provinces.
