Two friends, Pang Mui Fong and Chua Fui Lee, have pleaded not guilty to charges of cheating a 50-year-old man into investing RM337,000 in a Covid-19 testing scheme in Seremban. The accused, an accounts clerk and a housewife, allegedly deceived the victim between December 17, 2021, and April 20, 2022. The victim transferred the money in 17 transactions. The duo has been charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries penalties of imprisonment, fines, and caning upon conviction.
During the court hearing, the Deputy Public Prosecutor requested bail to be set at RM25,000 for each accused. However, the defense counsel argued for a lower amount, considering the occupation and circumstances of the accused. Pang, who works as an accounts clerk, had already paid RM22,000 bail for four other cases at the Sessions Court. Meanwhile, Chua, the second accused, is currently undergoing treatment for stage four cancer. The defense emphasized that nothing has been proven against the accused thus far.
Considering the arguments presented, Magistrate Syed Farid Syed Ali set bail at RM6,000 with one surety for each accused. The case will be mentioned again on August 24.
