INDEX, Washington: Two men from Japan who fell into the water at a dangerous swimming area in Washington state, popularized by TikTok, have been identified after their bodies were recovered over the weekend.
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the identities of the men on Tuesday as Hiroya Konosu, 21, and Takayuki Suzuki, 34, as reported by the Daily Herald.
After reports that two men had gone underwater and did not resurface, search and rescue teams were dispatched to the Eagle Falls area along the Skykomish River east of Index on Saturday. The men were part of a group of four individuals.
The bodies of the two men were found on Sunday.
The picturesque yet perilous swimming spot on US Route 2 has seen a surge in visitors due to social media, according to Sky Valley Fire Chief Eric Andrews. The falls, which gained popularity on TikTok in 2020, have become a frequent site for drownings in recent times.
The falls comprise a series of rapids where the water from the glacier is directed into narrow channels among rocks. People often drown or require rescue after being swept into or over the falls.
While the TikTok craze has subsided, Andrews mentioned that the falls continue to be a popular destination.
Emergency responders have advised individuals to appreciate the falls from a safe distance, away from the water. – AP
