IPOH: Two people were killed after a trailer crashed through the divider in the middle of the road and rammed into two other vehicles at KM317 northbound of the North-South Expressway near Chenderiang, Tapah.

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the 31-year-old driver of the trailer, which was carrying cement, died on the spot in the incident at about 5.30pm on Wednesday (Aug 16).

“A 67-year-old man driving another trailer that was carrying watermelons was also killed. A woman who was driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle suffered injuries to her face,” he said in a statement.

“She has sought treatment at Hospital Tapah,” he added.

Comm Mohd Yusri said the investigation found that the 31-year-old driver of the first trailer was on his way from Seberang Prai, Penang to Kuala Lumpur and is believed to have lost control of his vehicle and crashed through the middle divider.

“A review of the traffic offence records found that the driver had accumulated 13 traffic summonses between 2010 and this year. One of the summonses involved a road accident in 2018,” he said.

Comm Mohd Yusri said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving causing death.

“The victims’ bodies have been sent to the forensics unit at the hospital for a post-mortem. Those who witnessed the accident are asked to contact investigating officer Insp Nor Hazliyani Hashim at 05-401 1222 to help with the investigation,” he added.
