The U.S. Consulate in the northern Mexican border town of Matamoros on Monday issued a statement, informing that its “employees are currently under a shelter in place order” due to the increasing gun violence in the city.
Over the past few years, Matamoros, which shares a border with the U.S. city of Brownsville in Texas, has experienced a significant surge in violence, primarily associated with drug trafficking.
X, previously known as Twitter, was used by the U.S. Consulate General to advise residents to take shelter and stay updated with local news for further developments on the ongoing situation.
As of now, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City has not responded to a request for comment regarding the matter.
In a tragic incident earlier this year, two Americans lost their lives when individuals belonging to a drug cartel kidnapped four individuals in Matamoros, mistakenly identifying them as targets. This incident highlighted the extent of violence in Mexico and triggered criticism from certain U.S. lawmakers who were dissatisfied with Mexico’s anti-crime efforts.
