KYIV (Reuters) – According to officials, Ukraine successfully shot down 24 out of 28 drones launched by Russia in an overnight attack. The attack caused damage to residential buildings in Kyiv, as well as an infrastructure facility and a grain warehouse in southern regions.
The officials stated that over two dozen Russian drones targeted Ukraine’s capital, hitting the 24th, 25th, and 26th storeys of an apartment building, resulting in injuries to two people. Additionally, several other residential buildings sustained lesser damage as a result of the attack.
In the southern region, Russia once again attempted to hit port infrastructure, which has been a frequent target since it withdrew from a U.N.-brokered deal following its February 2022 invasion. This deal had allowed for the safe passage of Ukrainian grain shipments via the Black Sea.
“…Wreckage of the downed (drone) damaged a granary. There was a fire that was quickly tamed by the company’s employees,” reported the southern military command on the Telegram messaging platform, describing the aftermath in the Odesa region.
In the neighboring Mykolaiv region, an unidentified infrastructure facility was hit, causing a fire, although there were no reports of injuries in either region.
Later on Friday, Mykola Oleschuk, chief of Ukraine’s air force, announced that it had downed three Russian SU-34 fighter-bombers “in a southern direction”, although he did not specify the exact location.
Reuters was unable to independently verify that report.
