In Kyiv, Ukraine, the military announced on Thursday that they had taken down three more Russian Su-34 fighter-bombers in the ongoing conflict with Moscow’s air force. Army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi shared the news on the Telegram messaging app, stating that the aircraft were destroyed during combat operations on the night of Feb. 29 in the Avdiivka and Mariupol sectors.
Russia, who initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine two years ago, has not yet responded to Syrskyi’s announcement. There has been no immediate confirmation of these events from Reuters.
Avdiivka, located in eastern Ukraine, was recently captured by Russian forces after a prolonged battle. Additionally, Russia took control of the port city of Mariupol in the southeast in May 2022.
Last week, the Ukrainian military revealed that Russia had lost six warplanes in just three days of fighting.
Following the acquisition of advanced Western air defence systems, Ukraine’s military has become more successful in countering Russian aviation near the front lines. Despite recent setbacks in the eastern regions, they remain a formidable force.
Kyiv has accused Moscow of targeting civilian areas with Su-34s, especially in the Kherson region in the south, as well as attacking Ukrainian front lines.
While Russia denies purposely aiming at civilians, there have been numerous casualties from their airstrikes. The situation remains tense and volatile as the conflict continues to escalate.
