KYIV (Reuters) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy spoke with Pope Francis on Thursday about Ukraine’s peace formula.
In a post on X, Zelenskiy said, “We discussed our joint work to put Ukraine’s Peace Formula into action.” He also mentioned that “Over 80 countries are already involved in this process at the level of their representatives. And there will be more of them.”
Zelenskiy expressed his gratitude to Francis for his Christmas greetings and his wishes for a just peace for all.
Zelenskiy has indicated that the peace formula will be further discussed in Davos, Switzerland, but hasn’t specified a date.
The pope has sent Cardinal Matteo Zuppi as a special envoy to Kyiv, Moscow, Washington, and Beijing as part of his peace efforts in Ukraine.
In his Christmas Day message, Pope Francis called for an end to multiple conflicts, including the one in Ukraine. He has persistently called for an end to violence in the region and in the Middle East, emphasizing that “peace is possible” and that “we must not resign ourselves.”
Zelenskiy had previously invited Pope Francis to Kyiv and met with him at the Vatican in May.
