A farm worker in Ukraine’s eastern Kharkiv region died on Tuesday when his tractor hit a mine while ploughing a field, according to the Ukrainian emergency service on Wednesday.
Since being liberated from Russian occupation, the region is still dangerous due to heavy mining, and farmers risk their lives while working in uncleared fields filled with explosive devices.
The emergency service issued a warning through the Telegram messaging app, urging everyone to be cautious and mindful of the high risk of mines in the previously occupied territories.
An accompanying photograph from the service shows a burnt tractor with a torn-off wheel and a damaged plough, situated in a field near the site of the explosion.
Earlier this year, Ukrainian authorities announced that Russia’s invasion had resulted in the creation of the world’s largest minefield, spanning an area of 250,000 square kilometres (96,525 square miles).
