In the Zaporizhzhia region of Ukraine, three Ukrainian soldiers are regularly engaging in mortar attacks near the frontline. After quickly launching several mortar bombs, they replace the roof of their dugout, made of branches and leaves covering a tarpaulin stretched over a metal frame, to avoid revealing their position.
Ukraine’s army has been engaged in a counteroffensive against Russian forces, attempting to battle through heavily fortified trenches and minefields. The fighting has been intense, with the Russians fiercely resisting attempts by the Ukrainian troops to push them back. However, Kyiv claims that progress is being made after 18 months of occupation by Russian forces.
According to Hrai, the commander of the mortar squad, the advantage lies with the Ukrainian troops. The Russians have been thrown out of their former positions, which were heavily fortified, and now find themselves in a field with nothing. The Ukrainian soldiers have taken over these positions prepared by the Russians, giving them the upper hand.
The mortar position is part of a complex network of trenches and dugouts, featuring wooden walls and underground living quarters. The soldiers have constructed multiple rooms, including a restroom, kitchen area, and sleeping quarters. They have amenities like lighting, wi-fi, wooden beds, and furniture. Cooking equipment hangs on walls, and rifles are stored in another area.
Hrai emphasizes the comfort and convenience of their living conditions. The soldiers live like kings, with bunk beds, mattresses made of foam rubber, heating, electricity, and internet connectivity. They have all the amenities they need to make their stay as comfortable as possible.
The situation on the front line remains challenging, with the Russians attempting to regain their positions. However, the Ukrainian soldiers are determined to hold their ground and continue fighting. They take pride in their advantageous position and the progress they have made in pushing back Russian forces.
As the war drags on, the soldiers are prepared for an extended stay. They have ambitions to expand their dugouts and create more rooms. For now, they remain focused on their mission and the ongoing battle against Russian forces in the Zaporizhzhia region.
