KOTA TINGGI Umno information chief Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said (pic) states that her suggestion for the party to consider running independently in the upcoming general election is purely her personal opinion. The Member of Parliament for Pengerang emphasizes that her view does not represent the official position of Umno or Barisan Nasional, and therefore should not be treated as such. Azalina adds that her article, in which she proposed three possible scenarios for the party’s future, was written from her own perspective as a long-standing member and someone approaching the age of 60 who holds her own political views.
When questioned about the responses from MIC and MCA regarding her suggestion, Azalina explains that her intention was not to present the official stance of Umno but rather to express her personal thoughts on the matter. In a Facebook post earlier this week, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) pondered whether it was time for Umno to contest under its own banner in the next general election. Additionally, she raised the query of whether Umno would continue to contest under the Barisan symbol in the future or adopt a new coalition’s symbol.
It is important to note that her suggestion has not been endorsed by the party or the Barisan Nasional coalition. Azalina’s statement comes during the launch of the ‘Semarak Malaysia’ event in her constituency, as part of the celebration for the 66th National Day in Bandar Penawar. As an individual with extensive experience in politics, Azalina maintains her right to express her own perspective on political matters.
