UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is deeply concerned about the reported “deplorable living conditions” faced by Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum and his family while in arbitrary detention, according to a statement released on Wednesday by a U.N. spokesperson.
“The Secretary-General reiterates his concern over the health and safety of the President and his family, and once again demands his immediate, unconditional release, as well as his reinstatement as Head of State,” stated the U.N. spokesperson.
The Secretary-General’s worries come amidst reports of the difficult circumstances faced by President Mohamed Bazoum and his family during their period of incarceration. The U.N. believes that such conditions are unacceptable and violative of basic human rights.
The United Nations is deeply committed to upholding the rights and welfare of all individuals, regardless of their position or political affiliations. Arbitrary detention and mistreatment of individuals, especially high-ranking officials, raises serious concerns about the enforcement of the rule of law and the protection of human rights in Niger.
The U.N. Secretary-General has consistently expressed his support for President Mohamed Bazoum and his government, condemning any actions that undermine democratic principles or lead to human rights abuses. The U.N. remains engaged with relevant authorities to ensure that the situation is resolved in a peaceful and just manner.
“The international community must stand united in calling for the immediate release of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family, and the restoration of democratic processes in Niger,” stated the U.N. spokesperson.
The United Nations stands ready to provide any necessary assistance to Niger in order to ensure the full respect for human rights, the rule of law, and the return to democratic governance.
