According to the United Nations Human Rights Office, civilian casualties in Ukraine have significantly increased in the past month due to escalated attacks by Russian forces. In March alone, at least 57 children were killed or injured, twice the number from February. The U.N. Human Rights Monitoring Mission confirmed that a total of 604 civilians were killed or injured in Ukraine in March, representing a 20% spike from the previous month.
The Rights Office reported that the surge in civilian casualties in March was largely caused by Russian armed forces launching attacks using missiles and loitering munitions throughout Ukraine, along with increased aerial bombings near the frontline. The mission also noted that majority of civilian casualties (93.5%), as well as the destruction of educational and health facilities and critical infrastructure, occurred in areas under government control.
Ukraine experienced particularly intense attacks last month, prompting President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to raise concerns about depleting air defence missiles if Russia continues its relentless long-range bombing campaign. Zelenskiy revealed that Russia unleashed more than 3,000 guided aerial bombs, 600 drones, and 400 missiles on Ukraine in March alone.
