The head of the U.N. refugee agency expressed that the organization is currently dealing with one of its most challenging periods in history. Filippo Grandi conveyed this message during a meeting of the organization’s Executive Committee held in Geneva. He stated that with approximately 110 million individuals displaced worldwide and a significant funding gap, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is facing numerous obstacles.

Grandi highlighted the increasingly divided, fragmented, and inward-looking state of the world. This further complicates the UNHCR’s task, making it even more demanding than before. He emphasized the importance of the trust placed in the organization by its stakeholders.

The funding shortfall faced by the UNHCR this year is a staggering $650 million. Furthermore, the outlook for the organization’s financial situation in 2024 is predicted to be even more worrying, indicating additional challenges on the horizon.
