The French ambassador to the United Nations, whose country assumed the council presidency, stated that the U.N. Security Council could potentially convene as soon as Wednesday to discuss the situation in the Red Sea. Ambassador Nicolas de Riviere suggested that it is likely the council will meet on the issue sooner, possibly even the following day, in response to attacks by Yemen’s Houthis on Red Sea shipping.
He highlighted the severity of the situation, describing it as “bad” and expressing concern about the repeated violations and military actions in the area.
