(Reuters) – The United Nations Security Council was scheduled to convene on Friday afternoon to discuss the situation in Ukraine, following a request for an urgent meeting by Ukraine and its allies to address missile and drone strikes by Russia. This came after Moscow’s largest air attack of the war.
The meeting was scheduled for 4 p.m. ET (2100 GMT). Russian strikes across Ukraine on Friday resulted in the deaths of 31 civilians and left more than 160 others wounded, according to officials. Additionally, Poland reported that a Russian missile had apparently entered its airspace before returning to Ukraine.
Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that Ukraine and around 36 other UN member states had requested the Security Council meeting following the attacks, “which resulted in multiple civilian casualties and heavy destruction of civilian infrastructure.”
The Security Council’s website indicated that the council would address the “maintenance of peace and security of Ukraine” at 4 p.m. ET (2100 GMT) on Friday.
