ALOR GAJAH: The country’s unemployment rate continues to decline, reaching 3.5% in the first quarter of 2023 compared to 3.6% in the fourth quarter of 2022, according to Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar (pic).
According to Sivakumar, this decrease is attributed to a significant change in job-seeking patterns, especially among young people. Additionally, the government has implemented various initiatives to support job seekers aged 40 and above.
“There has been a noticeable shift in job search methods, particularly after the Covid-19 pandemic, with many individuals losing their jobs and subsequently pursuing employment opportunities that align with their interests and skills. This change in trend is readily apparent,” he said during a press conference held to launch the MADANI Tour with the Minister of Human Resources program in Pulau Sebang.
He also mentioned that data from the MYFutureJobs Portal indicates that 455,350 job seekers across the country have successfully secured positions in various sectors between 2022 and September 2023.
“This is a positive sign that more individuals are entering the workforce and the unemployment rate is decreasing. Meanwhile, they are receiving fair wages and salaries,” he stated.
Sivakumar further commented that the Ministry of Human Resources, in collaboration with other agencies such as the Social Security Organisation (Socso), will intensify efforts to reduce youth unemployment rates.
He added that the proposed program aims not only to lower the unemployment rate but also to equip the nation’s youth with sufficient training and skills to thrive in the highly competitive job market.
“We are closely monitoring global developments and trends to identify potential future job opportunities. Currently, there is a strong demand in specific fields like cyber security and digitalisation,” he noted. – Bernama
