KLUANG: Barisan Nasional has retained the Mahkota state seat after emerging as the unofficial winner in a straight fight against Perikatan Nasional.
Barisan candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah clinched the victory when he garnered 18,649 votes against Perikatan’s Mohamad Haizan Jaafar’s 4,748, says Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
Several more ballot boxes still remain uncounted, but Asyraf says based on the first-past-the-post system, Syed Hussien has taken the seat.
“We have won unofficially,” he said at the Barisan command centre.
This gives Syed Hussien a majority of 13,901 votes as of 7.15pm.
