BEIRUT, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) — The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) announced on Wednesday that it is in need of 15.5 million U.S. dollars to address the emerging needs resulting from armed confrontations in Ain Al-Helweh Palestinian refugee camp located in southern Lebanon.
“Numerous civilians were compelled to evacuate their homes due to the damage or destruction caused. All eight UNRWA schools, which provide education for 5,900 children, have been taken over by armed militants and suffered significant damage,” stated the agency in a declaration to the National News Agency.
Dorothee Klaus, the Director of UNRWA Affairs in Lebanon, emphasized that none of the eight schools will be accessible for the upcoming academic year, as the camp conditions remain unsafe, prohibiting the return of school children.
The statement highlighted that the fundraising appeal aims to generate funds for the establishment of alternative school sites outside the camp to ensure the safe return of the 5,900 students to school by October 2.
In Ain Al-Helweh camp, Lebanon’s largest Palestinian refugee camp, clashes broke out on July 29 between members of the Palestinian Fatah movement and Islamic activists. The confrontations persisted until August 3, leading to the death of at least 13 individuals and injuring dozens of others.
