(Reuters) – U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin engaged in a discussion with his Turkish counterpart to address Turkey’s military modernization, as stated in a U.S. readout released late on Monday. This comes after Turkey expressed its support for Sweden’s NATO accession.
In October 2021, Turkey made a request to purchase $20 billion worth of Lockheed Martin Corp F-16 fighters along with approximately 80 modernization kits for its current warplanes.
The Pentagon stated, “They … discussed the positive talks between Turkiye, Sweden, and NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg, as well as the Department of Defense’s support for Turkiye’s military modernization,” illustrating the content of the phone call between Lloyd Austin and Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler.
