JUNEAU, Alaska: A man from Alaska accidentally recorded his own drowning on a glacial lake with a GoPro camera attached to his helmet. However, his body has not yet been found, according to officials on July 18.
The Alaska State Troopers have stated that they will continue to search Mendenhall Lake for the body of Paul Rodriguez Jr., a 43-year-old resident of Juneau.
The troopers confirmed that Rodriguez’s helmet, which had a camera attached, was recording on July 11 when his kayak flipped over and he fell into the water.
“The recording shows that the kayak overturned due to a strong current coming from the glacier,” explained Tim DeSpain, a spokesperson for the troopers.
DeSpain further informed that the helmet was found on the lakeshore and it was turned in to the troopers on Monday.
On Monday, the Juneau police reported that Rodriguez was believed to have gone missing on July 11 near the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area. The police received a report from US Forest Service employees on Sunday about a vehicle that had been parked in the recreation area since July 11 and was registered under Rodriguez’s name.
Rodriguez’s son, Jaden Rodriguez, described his father as a kindhearted person who loved outdoor activities like fishing, paddleboarding, and snowboarding. He also mentioned that his father was a talented photographer.
According to Jaden, Rodriguez’s life transformed after finding God, and he often emphasized the fleeting nature of life.
“He was a good person,” Jaden shared.
The police stated that Rodriguez’s roommate last saw him on July 10, and friends reported seeing a social media post by Rodriguez on July 11 showing a kayak on a beach near Nugget Falls, which is located in the recreation area along the lake.
A kayak resembling the one in Rodriguez’s post was found floating unattended on the lake on July 11, leading the authorities to initiate a search.
