RENO, Nevada: A Nevada woman has been sentenced to five years in prison after she admitted to hiring a hitman on the Internet for US$5,000 in bitcoin to kill her ex-husband and make it look like an accident. Kristy Lynn Felkins, 38, of Fallon, Nevada, pleaded guilty to a charge of murder-for-hire in March as part of a deal with federal prosecutors to avoid trial, according to court records.
In addition to her prison sentence, a US District Court judge in California ordered on Thursday that Felkins be released under supervision for three years after serving her time. The case originated from Felkins’ communication with someone in 2016 through a dark web hitman website that claimed to offer murder-for-hire services, as stated in her September 2020 indictment. Felkins sought her ex-husband’s killing while he was traveling in Chico, California.
The authorities described the website as a scam that tricked unsuspecting customers into giving them money. In her statement admitting guilt, which was entered into the court record as part of her plea deal, Felkins confessed to offering an additional US$4,000 to expedite the timeline of the murder plot in March 2016. She further admitted to expressing indifference towards her ex-husband’s new girlfriend, saying she “did not care” if she was harmed during the murder.
Felkins revealed that her motive was the expectation of receiving a substantial life insurance payment following her ex-husband’s demise, which she requested to appear accidental. According to her statement, she asked the supposed hitman if it would be “possible to make it seem like it was a mugging gone wrong?” Felkins, who had been out of custody, has been ordered to surrender in September to commence serving her prison sentence. – AP
