In Venezuela, voters have rejected the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice in a territorial dispute with neighboring Guyana and have shown support for the creation of a new state in the Esequibo region through a Sunday referendum.
Despite the court’s prohibition on Venezuela taking any action to change the status quo in the area, President Nicolas Maduro’s government proceeded with a five-question “consultative” referendum.
All of the questions on the referendum were approved with over 95% of the vote, according to the electoral authority.
