The Veterinary Department (DVS) has lifted the temporary ban on the importation of cows and buffaloes from Australia. The ban was initially imposed on August 4 as a precautionary measure after accusations from Indonesian authorities that cows imported from Australia displayed signs of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) infection. The DVS made the decision to rescind the ban after two technical discussions with the Australia Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Department (DAFF) where data on the investigation into the matter was shared.
To obtain a permit for importing cows and buffaloes from Australia, importers are advised to first submit an import application to the DVS. It is emphasized by the department that all live imports will adhere to standard operating procedures which have been implemented to ensure a strict monitoring process for each consignment.
The DVS expressed hope that the rescindment of the ban would bring relief to the industry and consumers. Additionally, the department appreciated the transparent approach taken by the DAFF in resolving the issue.
