On Tuesday, the Volkswagen Group revealed that it intends to embrace Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS). This move will affect upcoming vehicles in its array of brands, which encompass Audi, Porsche, and the group’s Scout Motors. They plan to incorporate the NACS charge port in vehicles manufactured from 2025 onwards.
Various automakers have demonstrated a growing interest in the charging standard since Tesla’s decision to make it more accessible last year. In May 2023, Ford announced that its EV owners would have access to Tesla chargers using an adapter, and that its next generation of EVs from 2025 onward would come integrated with Tesla’s NACS charge port. Major automakers like GM, Rivian, Honda, Mercedes, Hyundai, Kia, Toyota, and Subaru then followed suit with their announcements to utilize Tesla’s charging standard.
The decision to adopt Tesla’s NACS charge port presents a significant shift in the automotive industry. This move signifies that industry players now recognize the importance of wider accessibility and integration with Tesla’s established charging standard, aiming for a more unified experience for EV owners.
