KUALA PILAH: Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin (pic), the secretary-general of Perikatan Nasional, has urged members of Umno to vote for the coalition as a message for their party president, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, to step down.
Hamzah stated that a significant percentage of Umno supporters already see Perikatan as an alternative, and voting for the coalition would indicate that they prefer a change in leadership.
“If someone else takes over, Umno’s future will be brighter and there may be changes,” he said.
“We at Perikatan want to see our country’s leaders, regardless of their party, are full of integrity to bring the country forward,” Hamzah added.
Hamzah also encouraged Umno members to face the reality of the situation and consider joining Perikatan, even if they do not want to leave the party.
“It’s fine if you don’t want to leave the party, but be with us and vote for Perikatan,” he said.
He also mentioned that the coalition would be holding a meeting to determine its candidates for the upcoming by-elections for the Pulai parliamentary seat and Simpang Jeram state seat, both of which were left vacant after the passing of incumbent Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub.
The Election Commission has scheduled polling day for these seats on Sept 9.
