LOS ANGELES, June 24 (Xinhua) — Tamayo Perry, a well-known Hawaii professional surfer and lifeguard, died after a shark attack off the island of Oahu in Hawaii on Sunday, according to authorities and local media.

Honolulu Emergency Services Department officials said they responded to Malaekahana Beach near Kahuku about 1 p.m. local time Sunday for a report of a surfer who had sustained fatal injuries, reported Hawaii News Now, adding that a caller told dispatchers the victim appeared to suffer more than one shark bite.

The victim was later identified as 49-year-old Perry.

Lifeguards used a Jet Ski to bring Perry’s body to shore, where he was pronounced dead, the report added.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi described Perry as “a legendary waterman” and called his death a “tragic loss” at a news conference, according to the report.

Perry made appearances in some Hollywood films and TV series, including 2002’s “Blue Crush” and 2011’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.”

According to the shark incidents list on Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources’ website, the tragic incident is the ninth fatal shark attack in the state’s waters since 1995.
