A senior Biden administration official revealed that teams for U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping have reached an agreement in principle for a meeting in San Francisco in November. However, there are still important details that need to be worked out.
This statement further elaborates on the comments made by White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre during her daily press briefing. Jean-Pierre stated that the two leaders aim to have a “constructive conversation” on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in San Francisco.
The unnamed official confirmed, “There is an agreement in principle to meet in San Francisco in November. We are still working through important details needed to finalize those plans.”
The potential summit between Biden and Xi was discussed during talks between Biden, his national security adviser Jake Sullivan, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi. These discussions took place at the White House and the State Department on Friday.
The APEC summit is scheduled to occur in mid-November.
