IPOH: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has called on the Penang government to provide an explanation for changing the venue of a concert originally scheduled to take place in Kepala Batas. The MCA president expressed confusion over the decision, noting that both locations fall within the state. He also highlighted past statements by the state government, including former chief minister Lim Guan Eng’s suggestion for cancelled concerts elsewhere to be held in Penang. Dr Wee emphasized the inconsistency in the government’s actions and questioned the reasons behind the change in venue, causing others to ask similar questions.

The Penang MCA chairman, Tan Teik Cheng, expressed disappointment with the state government’s decision to cancel the Kepala Batas concert set for September 20. He accused the government of taking advantage of the “green wave” that has swept through the northern states recently. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow defended the move by stating that the concert organizers agreed to relocate the event from Dewan Millennium in Kepala Batas to Batu Kawan Stadium in Nibong Tebal.

Dr Wee also commented on the issue of male attendees being required to wear a “songkok” (traditional Malay cap) before entering the Penang exco swearing-in ceremony. He criticized the DAP for previously criticizing MCA members for wearing the same attire and highlighted the consequences that MCA leaders faced during elections because of it. Dr Wee urged the DAP to be consistent in their actions, stating that if they are implementing the same rules, it is wrong to have criticized MCA in the past.

The controversy arose when male attendees of the Penang exco swearing-in ceremony on August 16 were instructed to wear songkoks before entering the ceremony hall in Dewan Sri Pinang. Many were surprised by this new rule, as similar state ceremonies in the past did not require such attire.
