Why you shouldn’t put your smartphone in rice after dropping it in water

Putting your wet smartphone in a container of rice is not advised due to the potential risk of small particles entering the device and causing damage. So, what should be done to prevent permanent damage to your device when exposed to water?

Even if certain high-end smartphones claim to be waterproof (check for their IP 67 or 68 protection rating), dropping your phone in water always poses a risk. When this happens, using rice is not the solution.

Once you’ve turned off your phone, place it in a dry, well-ventilated area. Afterward, gently tap it with the connector at the bottom to remove most of the water that has infiltrated the device.

You can also use a paper towel or soft cloth to wipe the phone clean, but be cautious not to introduce foreign objects (such as paper or cloth) into the connector. It’s important to note that attempting to use a hairdryer or microwave to remove moisture is not advisable.

After allowing it to rest for 30 minutes, you can then plug in the charger and ensure that the smartphone and its charging system are functioning properly. If the phone still doesn’t work, patience will be necessary. However, if the smartphone remains non-functional after 24 hours, it is likely damaged. – AFP Relaxnews
