KANOWIT: A woman, aged 48, was discovered dead on Sunday (Sept 3) after being bitten by a snake while searching for snails in Sungai Ulu Machan near here. Kanowit OCPD Deputy Supt Tega Bilong stated that the victim, Florence Galu, had ventured alone to Sungai Ulu Machan, close to Rumah Rundang, on Sept 2 at approximately 4pm to hunt for river snails.

Following her failure to return home the next morning, around 7am, the longhouse chieftain and locals quickly initiated a search for her. After 13 hours, at 8.15pm, they eventually discovered her lifeless body by the Sungai Ulu Machan riverbank.

“The investigation concluded that the snake had bitten the victim on her right wrist,” added Tega. It took three police officers over two hours, employing land and river routes, to reach the scene and conduct the investigation.

The victim’s body was laid to rest in accordance with Iban customs.
