According to Reuters, Judges at the World Court have instructed Venezuela to avoid taking any steps that would change the current situation on the ground in a territory that could potentially be rich in oil.
This area is the focus of a border dispute with Guyana, which currently has control over the territory in question.
The court did not explicitly prohibit Venezuela from holding its planned Dec. 3 referendum concerning its rights to the region around the Esequibo river, a key aspect of the lengthy border dispute, as Guyana had requested.
Despite this, the judges emphasized that any concrete actions to alter the status quo should be ceased.
