KUALA SELANGOR: Selangor, which accounted for 25.5% of last year’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and is considered the country’s economic powerhouse, may suffer if it does not remain under the administration of the unity government after the upcoming state elections on Aug 12.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamid emphasized that Selangor has played a significant role in enhancing the lives of many Malaysians through the creation of high-paying jobs, attributed to the large influx of foreign investment in the state.
“It would be a missed opportunity if Selangor were to be governed by a non-unity government that does not align with the Malaysia Madani concept,” he stated during his speech at a thanksgiving prayer session held in conjunction with the National Month celebration.
As the chairman of Barisan Nasional (BN), Zahid highlighted the united strength demonstrated by the combined parties in the Selangor unity government. He commended the Pakatan Harapan (PH) leadership for their willingness to allow BN to contest in a greater number of seats during the state election.
“Prior to the dissolution of the state assembly, BN only held five seats. However, due to the generosity of PH, we now have the opportunity to contest in 12 seats. This demonstrates the sincerity of their friendship,” Zahid added.
Before the dissolution, Pakatan held 40 seats (PKR-19, DAP-15, Amanah-six), BN (five), Bersatu (four), Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) (two), while PAS, Pejuang, and Warisan held one seat each. The remaining seat was held by an Independent assemblyman.
The seat for Batang Kali became vacant after the absence of its assemblyman from the state assembly for over six months. – Bernama
