KYIV (Reuters) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy emphasized on Tuesday that it is crucial for Ukraine to be offered a specific timeframe for NATO membership during the alliance summit in Lithuania. The divisions within NATO are expected to hinder the Western military alliance from extending a formal invitation or setting a clear date for Ukraine’s accession during the summit, which will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday.
In a message shared on the Telegram messaging app, Zelenskiy expressed his concerns, stating, “It’s unprecedented and absurd when a time frame is not set, neither for the invitation to join NATO nor for Ukraine’s membership. While at the same time, vague conditions are added even for inviting Ukraine.” Zelenskiy and his team have persistently advocated for a transparent pathway for Ukraine to join NATO once the conflict is resolved.
Zelenskiy further pointed out that the ongoing uncertainty regarding Ukraine’s NATO membership would create an opportunity for negotiations with Russia. He asserted, “A window of opportunity is being left open to bargain Ukraine’s membership in NATO in negotiations with Russia. And for Russia, this means motivation to continue its terror.” Clearly, Zelenskiy recognizes that clarity and certainty are vital for Ukraine’s security and stability in the face of Russian aggression.
Reaffirming his commitment, Zelenskiy stated his intent to participate in the summit, emphasizing the importance of addressing the issue openly. He proclaimed, “Uncertainty is weakness, and I will openly discuss this at the summit.” Zelenskiy’s determination to advocate for Ukraine’s best interests demonstrates his resolve to ensure a secure future for his country.
Meanwhile, Moscow, the aggressor in the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, closely monitors the NATO summit. The Russian government has vowed to take measures to protect its own security. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine heightens the urgency for NATO to provide Ukraine with a clear path towards membership.
As the summit unfolds, President Zelenskiy’s outspokenness and determination to secure Ukraine’s NATO membership will undoubtedly attract attention and garner support from NATO member states. The outcome of this summit is of utmost importance, not only for Ukraine but also for regional stability and the future of NATO. The decisions made during these crucial days will shape the geopolitical landscape in Eastern Europe. (Reporting by Anna Pruchnicka, Writing by Olena Harmash, Editing by Timothy Heritage)
