(Reuters) – President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has strongly criticized the corrupt practices uncovered during an audit of Ukraine’s military recruitment centres, describing them as “revolting.” In a video address, Zelenskiy pledged to address this issue by appointing individuals who understand the true significance of war.
Zelenskiy’s outrage comes following the exposure of corruption during the recent audit, particularly in the Black Sea port of Odesa.
After meetings with Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and the head of the SBU security service, Vasyl Maliuk, Zelenskiy stated, “The investigation has revealed numerous abuses, which are frankly revolting.”
The examination of recruitment offices is part of a broader campaign to combat corruption in Ukraine, a matter of utmost importance as the country aims to join NATO and the European Union.
Zelenskiy assured the public that the results of the investigation will be made public and subject to legal proceedings.
He emphasized the need for “people who understand the value of protecting Ukraine” to be involved in the recruitment system. Zelenskiy believes that recruitment centres should be staffed with individuals who have witnessed and experienced the war, including those who have suffered physical disabilities but have not lost their integrity and loyalty to Ukraine.
Last month, the head of a military recruitment centre in Odesa, who was accused of corruption and embezzlement, was ordered to be held in pre-trial detention. Reports from Ukrainian media indicated that the official’s family owned property in Spain and had obtained funds amounting to over $5 million without a valid explanation.
